NDIS Worker Screening Check: Complete Guide

The NDIS Worker Screening Check is a mandatory requirement for workers in risk-assessed roles. This guide covers who needs one, how to apply in each state and territory, expected processing times, renewals and exemptions.

What is the NDIS Worker Screening Check?

The NDIS Worker Screening Check is a national check that assesses whether a person poses a risk to people with disability. It is administered by each state and territory government and results in either a clearance or an exclusion.

A clearance means the worker has been assessed as not posing an unacceptable risk. An exclusion means the worker is not permitted to work in risk-assessed roles with NDIS participants. Clearances are valid for 5 years from the date of issue and are portable across all states and territories.

This check is separate from a standard police check or Working With Children Check, though information from those checks may be considered as part of the screening assessment.

Who Needs an NDIS Worker Screening Check?

The check is required for anyone in a risk-assessed role working with NDIS participants. This includes:

Key personnel of registered NDIS providers (directors, executives, board members)
Workers involved in the direct delivery of supports and services to participants
Workers who are likely to have more than incidental contact with participants
Workers in roles that involve access to participant records or personal information
Sole traders delivering NDIS supports directly to participants

Provider obligation

As a registered NDIS provider, you are legally required to ensure that all workers in risk-assessed roles hold a valid NDIS Worker Screening clearance before they begin working with participants. Failure to comply can result in sanctions from the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission.

How to Apply by State and Territory

Applications are submitted through the relevant state or territory screening unit. The worker applies, and the employer (provider) must verify the application. Processing times vary.

Renewals and Exemptions

Renewals

NDIS Worker Screening clearances are valid for 5 years. You should begin the renewal process at least 3 months before expiry to avoid gaps in coverage.

Workers can continue in their role while a renewal application is being processed, provided the application was submitted before the existing clearance expired.

Exemptions

The following workers may be exempt from requiring an NDIS Worker Screening Check:

Registered health practitioners regulated under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme (e.g., doctors, psychologists, nurses) — though employers may still require one
Workers who have only incidental contact with NDIS participants in the course of their work
Volunteers in some circumstances, depending on the state or territory and the nature of contact
