Self-Managed vs Plan-Managed vs Agency-Managed

One of the most important decisions in your NDIS journey is how your funding is managed. Each management type offers different levels of choice, control, and administrative responsibility. This guide compares all three so you can decide what works best for you.

Self-Managed

You manage your own funding

You take full control of your NDIS funding. You find and pay providers yourself, keep receipts, and claim reimbursement from the NDIA through the myplace portal.

Best for: Participants who want maximum choice and control, are comfortable managing finances and paperwork, and want to use any provider (registered or unregistered).

Advantages

Maximum flexibility and choice of providers
Can use registered and unregistered providers
Can negotiate rates directly with providers
Full control over how and when supports are delivered
Can employ support workers directly

Considerations

You handle all invoicing, record-keeping and claims
Must understand NDIS pricing and rules
Time-consuming to manage paperwork
You are responsible for ensuring supports are within plan rules

Plan-Managed

A plan manager handles your finances

A registered plan manager processes invoices and payments on your behalf. You still choose your providers and direct your supports, but the financial administration is handled for you.

Best for: Participants who want provider choice (including unregistered providers) without the financial administration burden.

Advantages

Can use registered and unregistered providers
Plan manager handles invoices, payments and financial reporting
You still choose your own providers and supports
Reduces paperwork significantly
Plan manager can help you understand your budget

Considerations

Plan management fees come from your plan funding
You rely on a third party for financial processing
Slight delays between invoice submission and payment
Less direct control over financial details

Agency-Managed (NDIA-Managed)

The NDIA manages your funding

The NDIA holds your funds and pays registered providers directly through the myplace portal. Providers submit claims to the NDIA and get paid without you handling any financial administration.

Best for: Participants who prefer a hands-off approach to funding management or who primarily use NDIS-registered providers.

Advantages

No financial administration for you
Payments are handled automatically between NDIA and providers
Straightforward and simple to use
No risk of overspending as NDIA controls payments

Considerations

Can only use NDIS-registered providers
Less flexibility in provider choice
Cannot negotiate rates (NDIS Price Guide rates apply)
Less control over timing and delivery of supports
Provider availability may be more limited

Can You Change Your Management Type?

Yes. You can request a change to your plan management type at any time by contacting the NDIA on 1800 800 110 or speaking with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC). You can also request this change during your plan review.

You can even have different management types for different parts of your plan. For example, you might self-manage your core supports while having a plan manager handle your capacity building budget.
