How to Prepare for Your NDIS Plan Review
Your plan review is your opportunity to update your goals, adjust your funding, and ensure your plan reflects your current needs. Good preparation is the single most important factor in getting a plan that works for you.
When Does a Plan Review Happen?
The NDIA will contact you before your plan expires to schedule a review. Most plans last 12 months, but some can be shorter or longer. You will usually receive a phone call or letter about 90 days before your plan end date.
You can also request an unscheduled review at any time if your circumstances change significantly — for example, a change in your disability, living situation, or support needs. Contact the NDIA on 1800 800 110 to request one.
Plan reviews can be conducted over the phone, via video call, or in person at an NDIA office or your home.
Evidence to Gather
Strong evidence is the foundation of a good plan review outcome. Start collecting these documents well before your review date — ideally 4 to 6 weeks in advance.
Tip: Ask your providers to write a brief letter summarising your progress, ongoing needs, and recommended supports. Provider reports carry significant weight in plan reviews.
Setting Effective Goals
Your goals drive your plan. The NDIA uses your goals to determine what supports and funding you need, so it is worth putting real thought into them.
Be specific about what you want to achieve
Instead of "I want to be more independent," try "I want to learn to cook three meals a week on my own within six months."
Link goals to the supports you need
Explain how specific supports will help you reach each goal. This makes it easier for your planner to justify funding.
Include short-term and long-term goals
Short-term goals show what you want to achieve in this plan period. Long-term goals show the bigger picture of your life aspirations.
Cover all areas of your life
Think about daily living, social participation, employment, health, housing, relationships, and community involvement.
Write them in your own words
Your goals should reflect what matters to you, not what you think the NDIA wants to hear. Authentic goals lead to better plans.
What to Bring to Your Review
You are entitled to bring a support person, family member, or independent advocate to your planning meeting. You do not need to go through this process alone.
